Youth Basketball TrainingYouth basketball training isn't really a whole lot different than regular basketball training. Sure, there are a few differences, such as things being on a smaller scale, but everyone has to start at the same place regardless of age. This page is kind of a hub for your youth basketball training needs. It will lead you to more detailed pages with the specific skill tips or drills you should explore. So where should you or your child's basketball training start? What should it consist of? Well, the best place to start will be ball handling. You have to handle the ball in order to get from one place to another, catch it, pass it, and even shoot it: In order to catch the ball, get from one place to another with it, and pass or shoot, you have to be comfortable handling the ball. Here's a quick overview of what youth basketball training should consist of:
Of course, you'll want to check out the Youth Basketball Drills, but you should also check out the information and links on this page. Ball Handling As described earlier, almost everything offensively in basketball starts and/or ends with ball handling. Because of this, youth basketball training should always include ball handling so that younger players get comfortable with the ball. Check out the links below for basketball ball handling tips and drills (including passing). Dribbling Tips | Passing Tips | Ball Handling Drills
A Basketball is a must for youth basketball training (preferably two). And gyms are great for team building skills, but crowded for individual training.
Youths having their own hoop and basketball(s) can greatly improve there skills and keep them active (my own hoop was the BEST gift I ever got as a kid).

I would have put this on the bottom of the list, but most younger plyers just want to score, so to keep them interested you should include shooting in their training. Us the links below for fudamentals, tips, and drills for shooting. Youth Tip: When using these, though, a couple of things may help, depending on the players' age and strength. First, use a youth ball, it will help to develop fundamentals and form. If available, also use a shorter rim so that bad habits aren't formed (i.e. using extra motion to get the ball to the rim). Basketball Intelligence Training for youth basketball should also include knowledge of the game. You don't have to learn everything about the game or teach your young athletes all that you know, but throwing in some tips and why they are effective doesn't hurt. A side not on this is that having someone else share their knowledge may be more effective for some younger athletes. For example, I know that my nephew listens to anything I say when it comes to basketball, and my brother-in-law has said that he can tell my nephew the exact same thing I do, but he won't listen until I say it. Basketball players can improve their basketball IQ by exploring this site, especially the basketball tips section. Rebounding It's difficult to incorporate rebounding into youth basketball training with only one person, but it can be done. It is also easier multiple kids that are closer to each other's size instead of a youth with a coach or parent for blocking out purposes, but the main idea is that youths need to understand the fundamentals and importance of rebounding. After all, it is the only thing that is done on both ends of the court. Check out the rebounding pages below: Sports Vision It's never too early to start out athletes on sports vision training, mainly peripheral awareness for basketball players. It will help with not only passing, but defense and dribbling as well. Check out the sports vision training pages for some tips. Conclusion This is just a general overview of youth basketball training. I'll also be adding a a youth basketball drills page shortly, but I recommend you browse more of the site, especially the links suggested in the sections above. Youth Basketball Drills Drills to help with your youth basketball training. Training Apparel Athletic apparel for your young athlete to wear in their youth basketball training. |
